Traditional Arafat Keffiyeh from Palestinian Factory in Red on White
Traditional Arafat Keffiyeh from Palestinian Factory in Red on White
This red and white keffiyeh holds a strong connection to both Palestinian and Jordanian heritage. The red pattern is particularly associated with Jordan, where it is a symbol of Bedouin culture and identity. Made by a Palestinian factory that has its origins in Jericho before fleeing the 1948 Nakba and reopening in Jordan. It was among the first factories in Palestine in its day and has been making Palestinian kufiyas for decades. The keffiyeh has become an important symbol of Palestinian resistance. In the 30s it was worn, and embraced as an image, by the armed guerillas who prosecuted armed rebellion against the British occupiers of Palestine. Until that period, the keffiyeh had primarily marked its wearer as rural, as a peasant, Fallah, or a Bedouin. Palestinian Embroidery Motifs 1850-1950: A Treasury of Stitches | Tatreez Book
Palestinian Embroidery Motifs 1850-1950: A Treasury of Stitches | Tatreez Book
Unlike previously published books on Palestinian Embroidery, this book, Palestinian Embroidery Motifs 1850-1950: A Treasury of Stitches , is the first to document all the different motifs by origin and names used on the old dresses. The tradition of embroidery is one of the great art forms of village life in Palestine. From mother to daughter, each generation added new inspirations to the traditional designs. Women would meet on market days, for family celebrations and of course at the pilgrims' meeting places and gain muse from each other. Margarita Skinner of Switzerland in collaboration with Widad Kawar of Jordan provides us with a glimpse into the history of embroidery, starting with the invention of the needle some 20,000 years ago. Over 200 Palestinian motifs of the period 1850-1950 have been illustrated. 230 x 200 mm 280 pages Full color photographs, maps & illustrations Paperback Language: English Rimal Books ISBN: 978 9963 715 12 1 All purchases from Handmade Palestine support fair trade artisans sustaining their livelihoods and we donate profits from every purchase to a local not-for-profit to plant trees and protect Palestine’s environment.
